Show me your plane storage/display

For those of you who use hand planes... I'd like to see the different ways people store their bench planes. I'm starting to round out my bench plane collection via ebay, and I think I'll probably limit it to as small as #3 Stanley on up to #7 or #8, including 4-1/2. I'd like to be able to display them in my shop, as well as keep them handy for use. I had been keeping them in a drawer of a tool cabinet, but now I've got too many, and I'd rather not hide them anyway.

So... Do you keep them on a shelf? Or have a special display just made for them? I'd love to see some pics if you have any.

I like it, especially the lower tier for the block planes. I had seen something similar to this before, but I was a little concerned that the tail of the plane could slide out and fall, but I see you've got a little rail at the bottom which would take care of that.

Good gracious Todd! Thats one mean looking set of tools!
All superb quality as well...........TAS indeed.
I saw an article in the latest issue of FWW's Tools& Shops that shows how to make a decent looking cabinet for fine woodworking tools, not bad.

Work in progress - cabinet is supposed to have doors which will provide racks for chisels, rasps, spokeshaves.

Yes, it's a Harbor Freight trim router box. I remain unrepentent

Hi. Because I have limited space I've put my plane on the floor joists above my head and the small ones in the printer type-set cabinet.

My main work bench has "work area" of about 3'x6' so I devoted one small corner to chisels and planes. I also like to keep them handy. There are maple runners that they rest on/against to keep them on the bench and to keep the blades off the bench.

My small ones and the spokeshaves aren't shown. My collection is quite a bit smaller than everyone else's. A fact I plan to bring to my wife's attention just as soon as I post this. EBay here I come...

I'm not going to show my haphazard mix of drawer and cabinet storage. I expect to move the shop this spring, and redo everything.

To hijack the thread somewhat, I see that a lot of people hang chisels in rows, one above the other. It makes sense in terms of organization--horizontal wall space is limited-- but aren't you bound, sooner or later, to cut yourself on the chisel that hangs above the one you are taking out or putting back?

Howard, that does not seem to be a problem as long as they are not in the same plane, in other words, the lower ones are moved out a bit from the ones above.

Some people don't like storing tools above the bench at all as there is always the danger of dropping things as you reach over the work to grab a tool, or that chisels may fall down and so on. I haven't had any real accidents with this (know on wood!), I think the advantage of the easy access and always knowing where things are outweighs this potential problem. Your tools will get dusty however. If you don't like this drawers are probably a better idea, but my drawers always get messy and disorganized and I never find what I'm looking for. Small tools can be kept in various boxes or trays.
